With today's confirmation of Eden Hazard joining Chelsea, I can finally draw a line through a name on this Silly Season rumour list. In the week when Euro 2012 starts, a grand total of 112 players have been linked with Arsenal since the end of the January transfer window.
Belgian international Hazard has been one of the players most often mentioned. But then again, he has been such a tart, hasn't he?
More than anyone this Silly Season, Hazard exemplifies the international football star who aren't really that interested in who he'll be playing for, as long as the paycheck is big enough and the potential of his teammates are good enough. He's spent most of his final weeks in French football talking up one team, then another, then another.
It was Real Madrid or Arsenal. Or a straight choice between Manchester United and Manchester City. Or Barcelona. Or Chelsea.
He ends up at Chelsea, where the manager is on his way out, or isn't. The biggest stars are ageing, or they aren't. Their talisman striker has left. The man given the task of renewal has long been fired by the man acknowledged as the most impatient club owner in Europe.
Still, Hazard doesn't need to know more than that his salary and Champions League football are certs.
Meanwhile, Arsenal fans can look forward to a season starring Hazard's teammate, "the best he's ever played with", the last man who starred for LOSC Lille and even won them the league: Gervinho.
