Don't we all love the Silly season. The sources for information aren't just players, agents, clubs or immediate family. The media also utilise other clubs' officials.
The club president of Serie A side Palermo have admitted defeat in the chase for Argentinian midfielder Ricardo Alvarez. When pressured by an Italian radio station, Maurizio Zamparini answered that Alvarez "has already signed" for Arsenal.
ESPN Soccernet are the first to bring this piece of "news" in English, as far as I've gathered. Expect the speculations to rise in the coming hours.
The Alvarez rumours started at the Spanish language Fox Sports TV channel. Later, they have more or less died down in the mainstream media. All the while, bloggers and fans have discussed the 23-year-old, his merits and potential, trying to decide if he is a world class talent or a dud. Arsenal are known to sign both kinds, of course.
And if arsenal.com are true to form, expect them to be the very last to report any completed signing. Don't we all love the Silly season, indeed.
[Added: looks like goal.com beat ESPN to the story in English. They still end up without looking trustworthy by claiming Alvarez would be Arsenal's first signing of the summer. I don't normally bother listing the many rumours copied and pasted on their site.]
