Desperate for defenders?

Sol Campbell have chosen Newcastle, and will join after a medical today, Sky Sports "understands" in this news item.

(When a news outlet "understands", the story is weaker than an ordinary story with ordinary sources, but still well enough founded that the editor wants to run with it. So it's all about whether you trust the outlet or not...)

Anyway, if Sol is off to the land of his bride, the club are down three defenders with only one having come in during the summer. Arsenal will need reinforcements, and any selling club will know it. This could compromise Wenger in ongoing or new negotiations.

Will it mean that Arsenal will be held to ransom over new defenders? I fear that. And I fear that our proud and prudent manager would rather not sign anyone than pay for over-priced, established players...
