In the almost ten weeks since I started collecting this Silly Season's rumours, the list of supposed Arsenal targets has reached 99.
The first rumour on the list involves Marouane Chamakh, who was already an almost certain bet for a free transfer - the deal was probably struck by then. The last rumour, updated today, is the Lyon midfielder Jean Makoun.
The Makoun rumour is typical: someone close to the player, probably the agent, whispers in the domestic media that Makoun is sa bit restless at Lyon. Some new challenges would be nice. This is picked up by web trawling news sites in the UK, in this case Sky Sports News.
Then, the linking has to be made on the British newsdesk: which club needs a midfielder? Which would perhaps buy a Frenchman? Which have been linked with him in the past? In Makoun's case, the answers were Tottenham, Arsenal and Juventus.
Hey presto! A mention on the Silly Season blog is secure. Even if the agent/source only wanted for Makoun to get a better deal with Lyon...
And who will be number 100? Is there someone you'd be desperate for Arsenal to be linked to? Feel free to leave a comment.
