So far, the winter Silly Season looks remarkably like last summer's. The talk is about Gary Cahill, Yann M'Vila and Marvin Martin, just some of the usual suspects. A good illustration is this article from the Mail on Sunday, where former targets and supposed new targets are put on the same list. Or this from the Sunday Telegraph, also based on speculation and the repeating of former rumours.
These stories are both developed from Arsène Wenger's last press conference, where he admitted to considering some activity in the January transfer window. True to form, he did say that his instinctive response to the question was "no", as he still thinks Arsenal have "a big squad". However, not ruling out signing anyone quickly turns into stories like this.
The main difference from the summer is that Robin van Persie has turned into everyone's odds-on favourite to leave Arsenal. While the doubts surrounding his future and any new contract can be argued to be a proper story, some of the coverage have more than a whiff of habit about it.
More than anything, habitual mentions of Arsenal as a selling club will enforce a public image of just that.
