The all time Silly Season classic in my view is Emmanuel Petit's transfer to Arsenal in 1997. After agreeing terms with Tottenham, the Monaco full back got the club to pay for a taxi. The ride was just down the road to Highbury and Arsène Wenger. Petit was introduced alongside Marc Overmars before Spurs knew what hit them.
A report in the French sports paper L'Equipe suggests that even this part of history can repeat itself. Monaco striker Park Chu-Young, South Korea's international captain and number 10, has been negotiating with LOSC Lille. Today, however, when club officials showed up at his hotel in the north of France to get the deal signed, he was gone!
Angry Lille representatives claim that Park simply took off for London in order to sign for Arsenal instead.
"This shows that the player wouldn't fit in at Lille anyway," club president Michel Seydoux sniffed. After losing Gervinho to Arsenal already this summer, he's now looking at losing his replacement as well. (And getting Eden Hazard from the same furious president looks even more difficult now.)
I'll believe it all when I see him holding the shirt, but as a story it still deserves telling!
