The papers and websites fill up with rumours of Ivory Coast and Lille striker Gervinho signing for Arsenal. The striker will command a fee, but the size of it varies from report to report.
The Daily Mail alone links Gervinho with Arsenal in four - 4! - separate items on their website this afternoon...
His French club has confirmed that Gervinho is interested in a move to the Emirates, and that they have permitted him to enter talks. So there's no reason for the rumours to die down.
After a long line of Arsenal insiders have spoken of a busy summer, Ivan Gazidis joined them when speaking to the Arsenal Supporters Trust yesterday. Very, very briefly put: moves will be made by Arsenal, players will join and leave this summer.
(As they do every summer, he didn't say.)
All the rumours, all the hype, and now the statements from Gazidis make people think that signings are imminent. Not least reports of restless Arsenal stars pile on a kind of 'pressure' - which, however, exist more in the media's own reports than at the club.
Shouting doesn't hasten signings, though. New players at the club aren't more likely to sign the next few days than the next few weeks...
In the case of Gervinho, or any other new striker, I hope the 'curse' of shirt no. 9 won't strike again. Eduardo was the latest in a long line of Arsenal players in that shirt who didn't fulfil potential and expectations.
