Fifty years ago, Stirling Moss still competed in Formula 1, winning the first race of the 1961 season in Monaco. Two months before, Luxembourg had won the Eurovision, the very first time the event was staged on a Saturday night.

Judy Garland made her great comeback at the age of 39. Grandma Moses had just turned 100.

Gagarin was in space, while his American counterparts still picked bananas with their feet. Berlin was yet to see the Wall.

Prime Minister MacMillan imposed a wage freeze in the UK. The footballers of the nation had just escaped the shackles of the £20 maximum wage.

Charles de Gaulle was President. So was Kennedy, but the residents of the US capital never got to vote for him. April 17th that year will always be remembered for the Bay of Pigs. And, for some, for the baying of pigs.

The five pound notes got colour. But TV was still in black and white.
