Interpretations of nuggets

Amid all the speculations about named transfer targets and their hefty price tags, there are some stories about Arsenal's general transfer policy. And, people, it's always best to hear it straight from the horse's mouth.


The Sun reports that Arsène Wenger 'will abandon his policy of buying young players' this summer. While remaining committed to his youth development project, he 'admits his young guns need some older heads around them'.


These are the kind of sentences that really makes the Season a Silly one. This nugget of information leaves a lot of room for idle, newspaper-pushing speculation about everyone from David James at 39 (!) via Matthew Upson and Scott Parker to Shaun Wright-Phillips. But wait a minute... There's one more sentence on the tail end of the Sun's rehashing of a press conference from a few days ago.


'The additions will be minimal but if there are some they have to be really top class.'


Minimal additions, indeed. At least Wenger is consistent, he has earlier made it clear that only two or perhaps three players will join the club this summer.


One is Marouane Chamakh, and the other...? Or even two? Those places are still up for grabs. And they will only be filled by players better than the ones in the squad already.
